recognize the classified staff at TMCC these are the people behind the scenes
who make sure that your needs beyond the classroom have been met and I’ve heard
some stories that some of the students some of you cried on the shoulders of
some of the classified staff sitting here and there and I know you got
encouragement from them so please join me in thanking our classified support

faculty and students as the former business division Dean I know the high
caliber of faculty we have here at TMCC I’d like to recognize some of those
faculty now those who are awarded tenure this academic year tenure is an

some of the outstanding faculty but for all that you do
year-round to help provide the best instruction possible to that to our
students we are grateful at this time I’d like to highlight student
accomplishments for the current academic year and I gotta be honest there are
hundreds of accomplishments and I’m I’m just giving a few highlights because I
know that the students are so excited to walk across that stage in a little bit
so these are just a couple of highlights the Student Government Association
participated in a nationwide campus election engagement project keeping
their peers informed of federal and local election process and it’s been my
honor to work with SGA this year as usual 60 MCC students were selected for
the Nevada NASA space grant community of practice scholarship to conduct research
in STEM fields that was one of the six all right good for you
and most recently TMCC landscape architect student anthony two colas
design was selected and will be used to design a public space in Reno that will
pay homage to mounted replicas of our country’s charter charters of freedom
the Constitution the Declaration of Independence that kind of thing so it’s
really wonderful and this really is just a tiny little sampling of TMCC student
achievements but please help me recognizing all of the accomplishments
many of them which I don’t have time to to mention today with a round of
applause thank you this academic year 670 students received
scholarships from the TMCC foundation totaling nearly eight hundred and ten
thousand dollars yeah that’s pretty impressive through the
continued generosity of our donors these students average twelve hundred dollars
per scholarship to help them achieve their educational goals
thank you to TMCC Foundation director Gretchen Sawyer the Foundation Board and
the generous donors that make all of this possible many of those donors are
right here today so I want to recognize also those donors with applause this is
really an impressive boost also you may or may not know that we TMCC serves
approximately 650 veteran students every year and 75 of those veterans are
graduating today yes and if you are us if you are a student veteran please
stand if you are a student veteran please stand and be recognized and thank you thank you for choosing
TMCC you enriched us and each veteran graduating today received a TMCC
challenger coin to show our appreciation for their service but I’m so glad that
that we’re here for each other thank you yeah go Nathan that’s right the next
group of students is really special we have 63 and I believe this is a record
63 TMCC high school students graduating today they’re receiving a college degree
yeah wait for it they’re receiving their college degree before they receive their
high school diplomas later this month so if you’re a TMCC high school student
please stand please stand to be recognized give a shout out good job okay
so you’ll notice on this stage behind me there are international flags
representing countries of the 15 international students graduating today
we are so yeah we are so honored that these students chose TMCC and i know
that many of the students who are domestic students not international
students I know that if you had an opportunity to get to know some of
international students in your classes that you too were enriched as as much as
they tell me you enrich their lives as well here in the United States so anyway
I’ve seen our international program grow through the dedicated efforts of vice
president of student services and diversity Estela Gutierrez and her
dynamic staff thank you for continued work on TMC’s international program and
as we continue to become a global campus I’m really excited to see and honor more
graduates in the future so with that I turn to some of our more fun and formal
speeches we are governed by a Board of Regents and it gives me great pleasure
to call on Board of Regents chair Kevin page who will deliver a message on
behalf of the Nevada Board of Regents and the Nevada System of Higher
Education chair page 2 president Hill Kison fellow Regents distinguished
guests esteemed faculty family friends and most importantly the graduating
class of 2019 welcome today is a moment to reflect on
your journey during your time here at Truckee Meadows Community College I’m
sure when you all first came to college you were afraid I surely know 30 years
ago when I began my college career I was scared as a first-generation college
student I felt plenty of pressure to succeed I can remember how daunting a
lot of College felt at first for me for the first time in my life I was on
my own and I was afraid but when fear feels vulnerable it is important to
remember some timeless advice Eleanor Roosevelt once said do one thing every
day that scares you with these words of mine they welcome feel like an old
friend we were going to hang out every day my journey throughout college was
similar to yours in that it was accompanied by numerous roadblocks and
challenges I was constantly scared I’m sure you were too yet like many of you I
kept in the end in mind and turned that fear into motivation I challenged myself
to be afraid I was going to take that incredibly hard class all of my peers
were too afraid to I was gonna change my major despite fears to do so I was going
to be ok with being afraid as I look back at my fear driven college career
it was the most vulnerable years of my life when I accepted fear as a friend
rather than my enemy I recognized my full potential and how many things I was
missing out on because of fear and vowed to not let it fear the dictate regrets I
was terrified to run for the Board of Regents but that fear was allowed me and
the honor and opportunity to speak in front of you all today representing the
board as chairman and that’s the thing I know you all can relate to oh whoa well
overwhelming fear I’m the new experience but we also face fear as this time comes
to an end you are here because you persevered stayed focused and found
great things within yourself but also you weren’t afraid to be afraid I could
only imagine the tenacity within Roosevelt household as Eleanor’s husband
President Franklin D Roosevelt once said we have nothing to fear but fear itself
when we ourselves overcome the fear of fear there was nothing we can’t do the
Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents has faith that armed with
your degree from TMCC a whole lot of tenacity a little bit of fear each and
one of you will make a difference for all the people you know and yet to know
you may be thinking the scary part is over as you leave college but it’s only
beginning this is when the real fear sets in
the fear of change growth uncertainty and evolution will come welcome it
accept it use it as you go on to the next chapter in your lives whatever and
whenever your journey may take you never stop being afraid in a few moments when
the furrow of your degree you embark on the greatest adventure of them all a job
and a profession certainly but more than that an obligation to share your talents
with the people you work with and the community in which you live an
obligation to your community and yourselves to live a life where fear is
driving motivation not a sauce a deer pill tation idea all of you that go do
one thing that scares you you are the next generation of leaders go shale
Nevada in this world what a little bit of fear can do on behalf of the Board of
Regents I wish to extend you my heartfelt congratulations on this day
you’ve owned it you’ve earned it and I hope you truly enjoy it
thank you okay Thank You chair page so there are a number of awards presented

Gigi and thank you Peggy for your support of these wonderful faculty it is
with great pleasure that I introduced the 2019 Truckee Meadows Community
College alumna of the year Wendy altameyer was a single mother of
three when she started at TMCC she held three or more jobs to pay for college
expenses exceeding the financial aid she received through TMC C’s reentry program
and foundation scholarships graduating with the nursing degree in 2008 wendy
was named as a recipient of the TMC C’s Regents scholar award which helped her
continue her education at the University of Nevada Reno after earning her
Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2010 wendy was nominated for the Northern
Nevada nurse of achievement award and became an active member of several
professional organizations Wendy currently works as a hospice nurse
and as a nursing assistant instructor at Fernley High School in her spare time
which is hard to believe she has any windii volunteers with local
organizations such as 4h and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life
ladies and gentlemen it is my honor and privilege to turn the podium over to the
2019 alumna of the year Wendy altameyer welcome graduates faculty Board of
Regents alumni students family and friends we don’t know what order we go
in so we have to say this over and over sorry okay it is an honor to stand
before such an amazing group of accomplished attendees congratulations
on all of your achievements my journey at TMCC began back in 2003 you might say
it was a little bit tremulous not only did I say to return to college at 35 my
nephew was killed in a tragic accident I went through a divorce I became a single
parent of three children and held three to five jobs all by completing nursing
school there were a few okay there were a few really many potholes
along the way but I won’t bore you with those details
let’s just say I made a lot of lemonade additionally fueled by those who said I
could not do it I succeeded what I did learn was that
perseverance is undeniably my favorite trait I obtained my associate degree in
general studies in 2006 my associates of Science in Nursing in 2008 and I
completed my bachelor’s degree at UNR in 2010 when really like all of my fellow
cohorts I wanted to bury my head in the sand and never see another book I
survived on 12-minute naps my children will literally tell you I
could fall asleep in 30 seconds and wake up 11 minutes later my support system of
family and friends along with a dedicated staff at TMCC reenter Center I
persevered I am positive that many of you today have had some challenging
academic obstacles being here proves and affirms your dedication to obtaining
your goals now that you are ready to start the next
chapter in your life and seek employment in your may be chosen field here are
some things I’d like you to remember first do what you love and love what you
do for me giving back to the community bring serenity to my sometimes my
friends say it’s not sometimes hectic life I enjoy assisting young adults and
finding their strengths maturing into adulthood and following their dreams
whether it is leading through 4-h participating in Relay for Life or
teaching the nursing assistant program at friendly high school I feel pride and
accomplishment when I can guide others to their fullest potential for me
teaching the nursing class is giving back to the profession and the community
that I love to watch so many students that I have influenced to pursue their
dreams and know that I had a part in their lives it is a wonderful feeling
next don’t be afraid to take a chance a nursing career for me with so many
opportunities yet I’m sure that every one of you can recall that one nurse who
seems angry burned out stuck in the dark ages and you wonder why they haven’t
retired well this is because sometimes we get stuck in the comfortable the fear
of the unknown the saying in nursing school was we may not know what we know
but we know what we don’t yes you have a degree it doesn’t mean that you stop
learning if you master something but are no longer being challenged what do you
really have take a chance with each job that I’ve held in the nursing field I
gained something more knowledge more compassion more empathy this is how you
mature intellectually mentally spiritually and physically
this is holism it says nursing students here they know that right finally
please don’t be afraid to ask what you need or want I learned at a very fast
rate that the worst answer I could ever receive was no I told myself I didn’t
have it before so I have lost nothing when I was a junior in high school I was
the class treasurer I was the one who submitted fundraising forms to the
office for approval one day the forms came back to me and
most of them were died I immediately requested to speak with the principal to
find out why he informed me that seniors had priority for earning money I did not
like that answer because we had to earn money as well to pay for the junior
senior homecoming my school didn’t have a prom so bear with me
anyway the following year I was treasurer again and as you guessed it I
went directly to the principal the first week of school with 22 fundraising forms
he firmly stated Wendy you know I can’t sign all of these I of course reminded
him that seniors had priority my point is you can ask for anything expect
nothing and be grateful for everything Truckee Meadows Community College is the
perfect was the perfect pathway for me I enjoyed the smaller classes the
approachable professors and the neighborhood feeling on campus there
were our resources and opportunities to suit every individual in this very
diversified community that we live in I am proud of my accomplishments and
attribute many of my tools for life to what I learned here and I think the
reenters re-entry Center for all of their guidance support and financial
assistance for every time I complained about completing yet another scholarship
application and then I was awarded the prize I hear Sydney say when was the
last time you made five hundred dollars an hour I can positively say it affected
my entire family too my oldest daughter went to UNR and
graduated quickly in four years no kids no work all school isn’t this what we
want for them to learn from our mistakes my next in line daughter graduated from
TMCC Dental Assisting in 2015 I have a daughter who will be transferring in the
fall for pre nursing and a son who will be entering this fall as well on the
promise scholarship we are TMCC and now you are – congratulations graduates and I wish you
all the best in your future endeavors again congratulations and now we have a
couple of really important presentations each year a Regent scholar is selected
from each Nevada System of Higher Education institution based on the
students academic accomplishments both campus and community leadership
contributions and potential for continued success this year I am pleased
to introduce Regent Gettys who will be awarding the 2019 Regent scholar for
Truckee Meadows Community College good afternoon lizards each year a
Regents scholar is selected from each Nevada System of Higher Education
institution based on the students academic achievements campus and
community leadership contributions and his or her potential for continued
success this year I’m pleased that’s yours there we go ignore that
it’s all good I know how to read we say the same thing and service contributions
this year’s recipient is Miss @cd Vasquez miss Vasquez we just stand there
as we brag about you miss Vasquez is a Dean’s List student graduating with her
Associate of Science degree from TMCC as well as receiving and advanced high
school diploma from TMCC high school @cd is an Upward Bound trio scholar who
participated in both University of Nevada Reno and UC Berkeley math and
science programs completing college courses during the summer at UC Berkeley
UC Berkeley @cd served as the TMCC student government association president
working closely with students administration and faculty she also
worked closely with the Washoe County School District Superintendent Tracy
Davis my boss to resolve student concerns in her time away from TMCC @cd
volunteers with organizations such as the American Cancer Society the Juvenile
Diabetes Research Foundation the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and the
education alliance of Washoe County at CD’s future goals are to attain a
Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering an MBA and both a Master of
Science and PhD in Eric aeronautical studies where she will be well on her
way to be the first president of Mars and it is with great pleasure that I
present the 2019 Nevada Regents scholar award to miss @cd Vasquez
congratulations Thank You Regent Geddes um good evening
everybody I want to want I want to welcome family members faculty
administration and family for being here today to celebrate such a beautiful
moment I’m honored to stand before you as your firm as your former student
government association president TMCC Latin dance club president and board
Regents scholar my mom was an alum and the elementary school teacher in Peru
and it seems like ever since the day I was born I was in a classroom my mom now
tells me stories of how I would as a three and four year old sit with her
second grade students and copy everything they would do if they were
writing then I would write if they were singing I would sing if they were
drawing then I would draw – looking back on these moments I realized that I have
always had a mean – a mentality that said if they are doing it why can’t I
therefore my journey to TMCC started when I committed to being a
first-generation college graduate that would not be that would not only be a
role model for my family but for my community this drive is what let me to
apply to TMCC high school as I started to take challenging college classes and
was given more responsibilities I started to stress out because I did not
want to fail however I now realize that it is because of what I’ve learned from
my failures throughout these past few years that I have set myself up for
success one of my biggest failures was in my first engineering class at TMCC
here my team and I the whole semester building and
designing a hovercraft that had to do two things first it had to be able to
move in a straight line and second I had to be able to turn in all honesty at the
beginning of the class I was not excited to work in a team that divided her
responsibilities and in my point of view put into each team members hands the
fate of my success on the last day of class
all teams presented their hovercrafts with a design concept and then proceeded
to demonstrate how they worked every single team’s hovercraft did not go in a
straight line in fact some of them started to spin out of control while
others went backwards I believe that this shows how everyone in my class
faced challenges head-on not only towards the end of the semester but all
throughout as well the process of building the hovercat hovercraft
required a lot of trial and error with constant researching and communication
however we did we decided not to give up when nothing seemed to work out and kept
trying new ideas until the last day it was because of this persistence that the
teacher noticed from both my team members and me that we all passed with
high grades as a result of this experience I have decided to double
major in mathematics and mechanical engineering at the at the University of
Nevada Reno next fall thank you I know that daily I will be learning
from trial and error facing constant failure yet I am more excited than ever
so my advice to you is always face difficult situations with confidence and
grit it was through my stubbornness and ambition to become a better student that
I raised my hand in class when I was confused it is why I took on leadership
roles such as TMCC SGA president and is the reason why I know I will be
successful in my future remember failure is only detrimental if you do not learn
from it it is continued to be active learners that do not let adversity
interfere with your future success I believe that this is why we are all here
today every single one of you has committed to your education by learning
every single day you have pushed yourself past what seemed impossible and
took on challenges head-on now I implore you to not stop continue
to immerse yourself in new learning environments and do not be afraid of the
unknown always look for new ways to grow as a student in citizen never give
anything less than your 110 percent into your work I am proud of each and every
one of you for accomplishing this amazing milestone I wish you all
prosperity and triumph and your future endures thank you and congratulations

dreams are keeping me the world to be one Oh so the world we’re gonna for the world we’re gonna me so I want to thank you for that lovely
song I appreciate the time that it took to really make that fantastic thank you
Mary Beth Burt for arranging this wonderful performance so now I have
something very difficult to do and it’s kind of interesting because I don’t know
about you but just now when I was listening to that amazing music and I
was looking at the wonderful lights and I could feel a collective spirit from
all of us here today celebrating these graduates I need to take this
opportunity to recognize a student who is not walking across the stage this
afternoon riki memory ramirez Lyra had dreams of
being here today but sadly he passed away just two courses from earning his
Associate of Arts degree with the 3.66 GPA
according to Ricky’s professors even while battling acute lymphoblastic
leukemia Ricky would show up to class with a
smile he was polite smart and actively participated in class and despite what
must have been tremendous pain and suffering Ricky never turned in a late
assignment the only day of class he ever missed was the day he passed away one
professor said that from the very short time Ricky was in her class she could
tell he was a very special person a joy to have in class today through an
honorary posthumous degree we are able to extend sympathy and compassion to the
Ramirez Lehrer family while acknowledging Ricky’s academic
contributions and special place in our TMCC
community accepting Ricky’s degree is his mother
Erma mrs. Ramirez will you please join me on the stage so so by virtue so by virtue of the laws of
the state of Nevada and the authority vested in me by the Board of Regents of
the Nevada System of Higher Education I confer upon Rikki
Ramirez an honorary Associate of Arts degree as recommended by the Faculty of
Truckee Meadows Community College awarded posthumously on this day May
24th 2019 with all the rights privileges and
obligations belonging thereto the moment we’ve been waiting for the
ushers will now assist as our graduates come forward to receive their degrees I
would like to ask dr. Marie merggle Oh vice president of academic affairs
Estella Gutierrez vice president of student services and diversity Regent
page chair of the Board of Regents to join me in awarding tonight’s degrees
and certificates names of graduates will be read by our academic dean starting
with dr. Julie Ellsworth Dean of the science division and Barbara Walden
interim dean of the technical science division so we begin with our bachelor’s degree
