2015 PCC Commencement Ceremony (Full Program)

>>Wow, this is a great crowd. Congratulations to all
the graduates out there.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>My name is Tyree Walker and I’m the Vice Chair of the board and
let us please stand. At least remain standing and
let’s pause for a moment of invocation. Dear God, we come to you on this
joyous day with our heartS, lifted. At Pitt Community College,
we are confident that you have guided these graduates to this
major milestone in their lives. Lord, on behalf of these fine graduates,
we ask you to electrify the sacramental rite of passage as these graduates
commence with the rest of their lives. Lord, we stand here today
filled with gratitude. Grateful for the constant support and
the love of families. Grateful for the life long friendships
that these graduates have formed. Grateful for the faculty, staff, and
administrators who have challenged and inspired these graduates to learn and
serve. Lord, let this day echo into
these graduates’ bright future. And as they leave Pitt Community College
we ask you to help us retain the confidence that your love and guidance
will always be with these graduates. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ,
our Lord, amen.>>Amen.>>Thank you.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>Please be seated. Good evening, and welcome to this 2015 Commencement Ceremony
at Pitt Community College. My name is Dennis Massey. I’m the president at
Pitt Community College. It is my honor to greet you graduates and
extend my sincere congratulations to you. We also welcome family members,
friends, and special guests, and all of our community supporters to
this important event in your lives and in the economic development of our region. At this time, I would like to introduce
several special dignitaries and guests. Will the following people
please stand as you are named? First, our Pitt Community College Board
of Trustees, Mr. Charles Long, Chair of the Board. Vice Chair, Tyree Walker, Secretary Don Mills, Student trustee, Austin Chiex, Mr. Paul Davenport, Mrs. Cathy Frasier, Dr. Peter Kregel. Mr. Jimmy Nelson, Mr. Michael Overton, Dr. Patty Sanders Smith, Mr. Randy Walters and Mr. Walter Williams. Let’s have a hand for this Board of
Trustees at Pitt Community College.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>I also wanna recognize the chair
of our PCC Foundation Board. This group is so important and we also
have one of the board members here. Our Foundation Board Chair as Ms. Vila
Braswell, and board member also here Mr. Don Brown, let’s have a hand for
the PCC Foundation.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>Would the following dignitaries
stand as I call your name? From the PITT county commissioners,
the Chair, Mr. Glen Web, Ms. Beth Ward, Mr.
Jimmy Garris, Mr. Charles Farley, Mr.
Melvin and Ms. Mary Williams. Let’s have a hand for
the Pitt County Commissioners.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>Thank you for honoring us with your presence. This is a special day for you graduates. You’ve earned the right to be a part of the Pitt County Community College
tradition. And I’m proud to welcome you in
a few minutes as a PCC Alumni. I ask that all parents,
grandparents, spouses, and everyone who contributed to our
graduates success, please stand and receive a hearty round of applause from
all of us for your ongoing success.>>[APPLAUSE]>>I know these graduates could not
have made it without your help. Now, you graduates are the largest group
of students completing degrees and diplomas and certificates in
Pitt Community College’s history.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>This is indeed the era of
the community college. And you have benefited from the high
quality education which we offer. Most importantly, you have taken
advantage of the opportunity. And now you are moving forward to jobs and
advanced higher education. In 1989, the Pitt Community College Board
of Trustees Established the Distinguished Service Award,
which presented to a person or persons who have demonstrated
outstanding contributions, to enhance the mission and
services of the college. Tonight, Pitt Community Colleges
2015 distinguished service award, will be presented to a former
board of trustee member who served as a trustee for 9 years. And as board chair in 2013,
2014 just last year ago. With Mr. Kelly Barnhill Jr.
and board chair Charles Long, please come forward for this presentation.>>[APPLAUSE]>>Good evening. Proud to taking care of this task. Let me congratulate all of you. We appreciate you choosing
Pitt Community College for your place of further learning,
let me add this word of caution to you, don’t let this be your last stop to learn,
there’s a lot more to be learned. Thank you, parents. Thank you, friends. Thank you everyone for
sharing your loved ones with us. As Chair of the Board of Trustees,
I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with all the people that
you see behind me and around me. Among those has been Kelly Barnhill,
a former board member. All of these individuals have
worked diligently to help you and to volunteer their time to help,
and Pitt County for education for all citizens and for
further opportunities for employers. For one year I served as vice chair and worked closely with Kelly Barnhill
when he was serving as chairperson. One of those years, 2013,
was an especially busy year, you might remember that that’s
the year that you, the voters, passed a $19.9 million bond referendum. That will provide for
us a new science building. They really needed a new science building. And a new law enforcement center. This was due in large part
to Kelly’s leadership. He served as chair when PCC developed
the plan for an expanded student center. As well as a major transfer agreement
between the university of North Calorina and all its campuses. Mr. Barnhill remains connected with PCC, he’s on the president’s business
industry and bursary committee and a strong supporter not only that but
all our programs at the college. He’s a graduate of NC State University
with a degree in Civil Engineering and serves as President of
Hendrix-Barnhill Company here in. It’s my honor, it’s my pleasure,
to present Kelly with a Pitt Community College
distinguished service award for 2015.>>[APPLAUSE]>>At this time, I would like to introduce our speaker,
Mr. LaQuon Rogers.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>That’s right, he’s one of you.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>PCC has had many strong student
government leaders over the years. LaQuon is in this tradition,
but distinguishes himself. It is not just his God given skills,
his talents, speaking, studying, singing,
being consistently positive and proactive in his interactions with
all kinds of people on campus and in the community, but the way he has
dedicated himself to the mission and goals of Pitt Community College. He’s a great example of the success
of our students especially in how he articulates and
represent our best student values and habits, integrity, persistence,
service above self. He has been a delight to work with, especially during that 2013 bond
referendum that Chair Long mentioned. I particularly applaud his
accomplishments as head of the North Carolina
Community College Students, and as a member of the State Board
of Community Colleges. And in fact, this year,
just a few months ago, he was named the first ever recipient
from Pitt Community College of the Governor Robert Scott
leadership award. I have to tell you that when we discussed
the introduction of LaQuon Rogers, I said that I’d much rather go before
him in speaking than try to follow him. Because he is that
impressive an individual. And I know that you
will enjoy his remarks. Mr. Rogers,
would you step forward, please?>>[APPLAUSE]>>Thank you, Dr. Massive for that wonderful introduction
and for the wonderful model of steady leadership that you have
displayed for so many others and me. Well, graduates I always say
there are three kinds of people. Some people watch things happen. Some people make things happen, and
then you have others that just go, what happened?>>[LAUGH]
>>But tonight, graduates, we have made a good thing happen.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>Now, going to tell you before I go any further
in my speech, I, the gentleman sitting in the seat beside me, I wouldn’t even recall
his name, but we made an agreement. That if I couldn’t get through this
speech that he’d finish and he said, I’ll tell you something better than that. He said, if you get too long,
I’ll throw something and hit you on the back of the head.>>[LAUGH]
>>So we’re gonna use the KISS method,
Keep It Simple Sir. It’s indeed an honor and humbling experience to stand before
this 2014-15 graduating class. I am delighted to be a part of this moment
that will soon become history in our hearts. I give honor to God, my salvation. The president’s leadership team,
trustees, faculty, and staff of Pitt Community College,
my inspiration. To all of my family and
friends, my motivation. And to every person who
made this day happen, I send to you my sincere appreciation. It seemed to be a long journey towards
this celebration we call graduation. We’ve finally arrived. In the paraphrased words of
the famous rapper Arbre Jake Graham, we started from the bottom,
now we’re here.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>And it feels good to finally reach the top
of the mountain of transfiguration. Despite the curves called financial
hardships, loops called hectic schedule, speed bumps called depression,
red lights called enemies, caution lights called sleep
deprivation and flats called jobs. We have transformed our dream of
degree completion into reality. Graduates, let’s take a moment to
celebrate our accomplishments.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>I’ve had the privilege of being
reared by my grandparents, Franklin Rogers, Julia Rogers, and
my great-grandmother Athelene Allen. I am blessed to have my parents who
continue to guide me, my family, godparents, and mentors who never failed
to steer me in the right direction. They have taught me the importance
of becoming a well disciplined and educated young man. Family and friends, we the Class of
the 2015 of Pitt Community College, would like to say thank you for
being the wind beneath our wings.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>In my earlier days, I quickly learned
that failure for me is not an option. There is only one way to fail and
that is to fail you. If you really think about it,
there have been many obstacles that could have prevented us from
being a part of this moment. But none of us have failed tonight. I can remember trying to decide where I
will stop my collegiate experience before I graduated from high school. As I laid out my options so carefully. ECU too big,
Morehouse University, too much. Catawba Valley, not quite. I said the previous sentence jokingly,
however, what I mean and what I’m about to say next
is with all sincerity. There was one hindrance
that stood in the way of the previously mentioned
Universities and myself. This is the way I tell this part
of my journey so listen up. One day I decided to converse with my
piggy bank, and I said piggy bank let’s go, and my piggy bank looked back
to me and said, let’s go where? I holla bet to university. My piggy bank said, no sir,
we cannot go there.>>[LAUGH]
>>My family could not afford to send me to university. It was challenging watching my friends go
to universities and happen to remain home. Because of my family decision,
because of my decision not to be in debt.>>But I heard about the life-changing
impacts that Pitt Community College made on the lives of so many people. I decided to apply, and
the rest is history. PCC has provided me and
other students with opportunities through the PCC Foundation, Student Ambassadors
programs, Student Government Association, Trio Services, and many more programs
that encourage student development. This has proven that with hard work,
regardless of my economic situation, I can be whatever I wanna be, and that my
future will be as bright as I make it. I would like to highlight one program that
has been an integral part of my collegiate education. That’s the PCC Visions program. From start to finish, Visions has assured that my academic
vision was carried out successfully. I have developed professionally, and continue to build upon
my leadership skills. This program has taught me the importance
of being a responsible college student. I take my hat off to Mr. Jasmine Spain,
Miss Marianne Cox, and the Visions staff. When I think of Pitt Community College,
words like opportunity, success, hope, caring, and
altruistic come to my mind. PCC has given me hope to continue my
education and my educational journey, insight for success, and has embodied
the phrase, everybody is somebody. In the words of Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr., he said, everybody can be great,
because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have
a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and
your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know about Plato and
Aristotle to serve. You only need a heart full of grace and
a soul generated by love. As a child reared by a village of mentors,
I’m captivated by the life and work of Jesus Christ,
who was undeniably a servant. His example has shaped
my leadership outlook. When I came to Pitt Community College,
I wanted to serve. I felt the need to find
some way to give back. Had it not been for
the PCC Foundation and the work of so many others, my journey to
success would have been rough. Because of my inner will to serve,
I chased opportunity after opportunity. I have served as president of
the PCC Student Government Association, the PCC Student Ambassadors,
and the president of the North Carolina Comprehensive Community
College Student Government Association, representing the over 800,000 students
throughout the community college system. This has been my way of giving back
to all those who believed in me. Graduates, we should always
find a way to give back. We must remember that we are reaping
a harvest from fields we have not planted, water from wells we have not dug, and a house that’s full of good things
we have not filled them with. We are, because somebody else was. As one chapter of our lives close and
another one begins to unfold, remember to never do things for accolades, and
to always put the work before the title. Many people consider a good leader to
be someone who is always out front, or the person with the most to say, or even the one in the meeting
with all the good ideas. During my relatively short lifetime, I
have formed my own opinion of leadership. To me, an effective leader has
a servant’s heart, a soldier’s will, and the ability to make a lifetime
impact in a single moment. As we graduate tonight and
move on towards bright futures, I would like to share two rules for
successful life. Rule number one,
never lose your ability to dream, or your drive to transform
your dream into a reality. Your success should not stop here. I say that again,
your success should not stop here. Your dreams should not stop here. If anything, your dreams should
be in the expansion process. If you can transform one dream of
degree completion into a reality, you can do the same for
every dream you have. Don’t get lackadaisical just because
you have conquered this mountain, but go back down in the valley and
get ready for your next win. No one can make your dream happen but you. Rule number two,
don’t forget rule number one.>>[LAUGH]
>>Before we bid farewell to the great Pitt Community College, and
as I prepare to take my seat, I leave these final words with my class. When life begins, I’m in charge. Right now, I got the mic. When life begins to trouble you and
your dreams seem too far to reach, it is then that you must remember your A,
B, Cs. No, not the alphabet that we were
taught in elementary school, but we must remember the A, B, Cs of life. Are you ready? Author Tim Lee, we must A, accept
the challenge and B, believe in ourselves. We must C,
convert our thoughts into hope and D, determine to convert
our hopes into dreams. We must E,
expect some obstacles on the way up and F, fight while being faithful and
finish the course. We must G, get God on our side and H,
have a Harvey model of leadership. We must I, inspire someone else and
J, take Jesus on our journey. We must K, keep on keeping on and
L, be a leader. We must M, make every day count and
N, never give up. We must O, overcome every obstacle and
P, put our best foot forward. We must Q, quit quitting while R,
running the race with patience. We must S, strive on and
T, trusting in the Lord. We must U, use our talents and
V, value our time. We must W, wait for understanding and
X, x-ray our own lifestyles. We must Y,
yearn to achieve all that we seek and Z, be zealous when reaching the top.>>[APPLAUSE]>>Family, thank you.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>Family and friends, I want you to take a good look at us,
indulge this moment. It does not yet appear what we shall be. Eyes have not seen, nor ears have heard,
neither have it entered in to the hearts of men, the good
things that God has in store for us. So therefore,
be it resolved this 13th day of May, 2015, that we, the 2015 graduating
class of Pitt Community College, are the products of a strong and
thriving community college system. We were the leaders of tomorrow,
now we are the leaders of today. We depart to serve. Some of us will lead by entering directly
into the workforce as highly trained individuals. Some of us will lead in business and
industry by starting our own businesses. And some of us will lead right here in
Pitt County by making this the place where we live, work, and play. And some of us will leading classroom
across this great state and nation as we pursue higher education. But whatever we do, we’ll do it well,
because that’s what Bulldogs do. Thank you.>>[APPLAUSE]>>I actually always
like following Laquan. I feel like I’ve been to church,
I’m inspired. [APPLAUSE]
>>As mentioned, and a number of other
individuals have mentioned this evening, that your success and Pitt Community
College’s success is a collaboration. Your family, your friends have supported
you, and there are a number of other groups that also have supported
you on your educational journey. So, members of the Board of Trustees, Dr
Massey and other distinguished guests and friends, it is with great pleasure that
I recognize the outstanding faculty, who have guided our graduates. Will the faculty please stand? Give them a round of applause please.>>[APPLAUSE]>>There are also many staff who support our college,
will the staff members please stand?>>[APPLAUSE] Let’s give them
a round of applause please.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>Tonight, you will notice that some graduates wear academic
regalia representing special achievements. Please note that the honor recognitions are listed on the last
page of your program. The Graduates will be called forth
by the Dean of each division, and I am pleased to introduce
these Academic Leaders. Please stand as I call your name. Dr. Stephanie will present the graduates
of the Arts and Sciences Division. Ms. Catherine Klide will present
the graduates of the Business Division. Mr. Mark Faithful will present the graduates of the Construction
and Industrial Technology Division. Dr. Dan Mayo will present the graduates of the Public services and
Fine Arts Division.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>And Miss Donna Neal will present the graduates
of the Health, Sciences Division.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>The degrees and diplomas will be concurred
by President Massey. Each graduate worked very
hard to complete his or her degree and his employer and that
everyone be able to hear his or her name. So please, we ask you to honour
our graduates by allowing them to hear their name called, please.>>It is my pleasure to announce
